Hungary may tap up to €16.4 billion EU funds after Brussels deal

The Hungarian cabinet announced that a political agreement reached in Brussels could unlock up to €16.4 billion (about 6 trillion forints) of EU funding for the country. The largest portion is expected to come from the EU Recovery Fund, with up to €10 billion potentially becoming available if Hungary meets the required conditions. Transport, energy, environmental and housing projects are slated to benefit, including railway upgrades such as the Békéscsaba‑Lőkösháza line.

Implementation will depend on new legislation focused on anti‑corruption and transparency, which the government plans to submit to parliament in the coming days. The funding will be released in stages, contingent on EU approvals and the fulfillment of stipulated criteria, meaning the money is not guaranteed to arrive immediately.

If the measures are adopted quickly, the earmarked resources could support large‑scale infrastructure and social programmes, but their impact will hinge on the speed of legal reforms and the EU’s final assessment.
