Hungary: Minister Vitézy announces major infrastructure adjustments

Hungarian Minister of Transport and Investment Dávid Vitézy has announced significant changes to two major infrastructure projects.

Regarding the Mohács Danube Bridge, the government has reviewed the project to address what Vitézy described as the previous administration’s flawed investment policies. By optimizing associated road developments, the government expects to save approximately 75 billion forints. Additionally, the contractor has agreed to refund 59 billion forints in advances that were not covered by completed work. Despite these cost-cutting measures, Vitézy confirmed that construction will not be halted and that the 2027 budget will provide the necessary funding to complete the bridge.

In a separate development, Vitézy visited the planned site for the ‘Diákváros’ (Student City) project in Ferencváros alongside EU Commissioner Dan Jørgensen. The project aims to transform the area near the Ráckevei-Danube bank into a residential and urban development district. The government intends to utilize EU funds to create affordable housing, student dormitories, and public parks. This initiative replaces the previous plan to build a Fudan University campus on the site, a project that Vitézy stated had been stalled by the former administration.
