Hungary moves to terminate highway concession amid M1 upgrades

The Hungarian government has moved to terminate a major highway concession agreement involving the management of a 1,237-kilometer motorway network. The contract, which was awarded to private investors including Lőrinc Mészáros and László Szijj, has faced significant legal scrutiny and criticism regarding its transparency and cost to taxpayers. Estimates suggest the concession could cost the average Hungarian resident approximately 111,000 HUF annually based on current population figures.

Concurrently, physical infrastructure upgrades are progressing on the M1 motorway. MKIF Zrt. has announced a transition to a 2+2 lane traffic system between the M0 and Tatabánya sections. This expansion includes the application of a thicker, 32 cm asphalt layer to improve durability. As part of these works, speed limits are being adjusted, increasing from 80 km/h to 90 km/h on certain sections, with junction limits rising from 60 km/h to 70 km/h.
