Hungary observes national mourning on October 6
Hungary and Hungarian communities across the region observed October 6 as a national day of mourning, commemorating the 1849 executions of the thirteen martyrs of Arad and Prime Minister Lajos Batthyány following the suppression of the Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence.
In Budapest, official ceremonies included the lowering of the national flag to half-mast at Kossuth Square and wreath-laying at the Batthyány eternal flame. State leaders, including the President and Prime Minister, participated in the military honors and processions.
Commemorative events also took place in various cities and across borders. In Romania, ceremonies were held in Oradea, Cluj-Napoca, and Székelyudvarhely, involving local schools, churches, and civil organizations. Special exhibitions, such as a portrait collection of the martyrs in Arad, were opened to the public. Other regional observances included memorial services in Magyarkanizsa, Serbia, and Geszt, Hungary, focusing on the personal histories and legacies of those who fought for national independence.
