Hungary opens competition for Media Council chairmanship
Hungary’s Parliament Cultural Committee has published a public call for applications to fill the five‑year chair of the Media Council (Médiatanács), the governing body of the National Media and Telecommunications Authority (NMHH). The call, signed by committee chair Alexandra Szentkirályi, outlines eligibility criteria, requiring at least five years of experience in media regulation or telecommunications management and a clean criminal record, while barring recent party officials and former council members.
A special ad‑hoc committee will evaluate the applications and nominations for council members. The committee will consist of three government‑party representatives, two opposition representatives and five members delegated by professional media organisations such as the Hungarian Publishers Association and the Electronic Broadcasting Association. Applicants will be interviewed, and the shortlisted candidate will be proposed by the committee, nominated by the prime minister and formally appointed by the president for a five‑year term.
