Hungary launches probe after two postmen die in extreme heat

Two Hungarian postal workers died while on duty during a heatwave with temperatures above 40 °C. The government’s Minister of Economy and Energy, István Kapitány, ordered an immediate investigation, stating “the safety of workers cannot be secondary” and promising to inform the public when the inquiry is completed.

Hungarian Post confirmed the deaths and said it had provided cooling drinks, additional breaks, summer workwear and sunscreen to staff during the heat spell. The company said it could not disclose further details until the investigation is finished. The post‑office also limited deliveries to urgent items and introduced flexible start times on the hottest days.

Authorities have not yet found a direct causal link between the extreme heat and the fatalities, but the investigation will examine working conditions and any possible shortcomings.

The incident has prompted public discussion about worker protection during extreme weather, and the government has pledged continuous updates as the probe proceeds.
