Hungary organic food market grows 28% between 2023 and 2025
The organic food and beverage market in Hungary experienced significant growth between 2023 and 2025. According to data from the Ecological Research Institute (ÖMKi) based on NielsenIQ RMS figures, the turnover for organic food and drink categories rose by 28%, reaching approximately 53.8 billion forints in 2025. This growth outpaced the 14% increase seen in the total food and beverage retail market.
While organic products accounted for roughly 0.8% of total retail turnover, the volume of sales also expanded. Quantitative sales increased by 26%, with per capita consumption rising by 25% during the period.
Data indicates that organic products became relatively more affordable compared to general inflation. Between 2023 and 2025, while general inflation reached 34.5%, the average price of the studied organic products increased by only 11.2%. Despite this improvement in relative affordability, high prices remain a primary barrier to regular organic consumption.
In terms of retail channels, supermarkets and drugstores combined held a 46% market share, while discount stores accounted for 37%.
