Hungary outlines AI strategy and digital state goals

The Hungarian government is outlining a strategic approach to artificial intelligence, focusing on building a digital state and ensuring technological sovereignty. Zoltán Tanács, Minister of Science and Technology, emphasized the need for high-level agreements with major US developers such as OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft to mitigate risks associated with access to advanced models.

Addressing cybersecurity, the ministry highlighted that advanced AI models significantly outperform human capabilities in cyberattack simulations, necessitating a unified national cybersecurity organization. The strategy also involves preparing the next generation for an AI-driven era. Experts at recent conferences noted that while AI offers opportunities in medicine and communication, it also lowers the barrier for disinformation and cyberattacks.

In education, discussions centered on the importance of critical thinking and the Socratic method to complement AI tools, rather than replacing human intellectual effort. Meanwhile, in Oradea, Romania, the completion of a digital infrastructure project for 43 schools faced challenges, as some institutions received different or fewer tools than requested due to strict delivery deadlines required to close the PNRR-funded project.
