Hungary government outlines EU recovery fund projects and legislative steps
Hungarian ministers held a press briefing to detail plans for accessing the European Union's post‑pandemic recovery fund, which could total up to €16.4 billion for Hungary. The funding is earmarked for housing, energy, transport and other infrastructure projects, with the bulk to be disbursed under the Recovery and Resilience Facility.
The government said it must meet a set of 27 EU‑defined milestones by 31 August 2026 to unlock the money. A draft law will incorporate these milestones into Hungarian legislation, allowing the remaining €10 billion to be released once the conditions are satisfied. The briefing also announced the re‑allocation of €1.1 billion previously counted elsewhere, new investments in railway upgrades (including €1.8 billion for new rail cars and intercity trains), a €1.5 billion boost for energy supply, and a capital increase for the development bank MFB to support small‑ and medium‑sized enterprises, student housing and other projects.
