Hungary parking regulations: Grace periods and fine avoidance

Hungarian law provides specific grace periods for motorists to avoid parking fines after their paid time expires. According to the regulations, a 5-minute grace period applies if the initial parking duration was less than one hour. For parking sessions of at least one hour, the grace period extends to 15 minutes.

In Budapest, specific local regulations allow for the cancellation of fines under certain conditions. If a driver initiates payment immediately following an inspection, the fine may be voided. For mobile parking, payment must be started within 5 minutes of the inspection, while parking machine payments must be completed within 10 minutes. This process is not automatic and requires a written complaint to the parking operator after receiving a fine notice.

To contest a fine issued within the legal 5 or 15-minute grace periods, drivers should submit a written appeal to the relevant service provider, citing the appropriate legal statutes.
