Hungary passes new law regulating state security agent files

The Hungarian Parliament has passed new legislation regarding the regulation of state security agent files. The law, which focuses on the Historical Archives of the State Security Services, was approved with 149 votes in favor and 35 abstentions.

Scheduled to take effect on the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Revolution, the law aims to increase transparency and accessibility regarding files from the communist dictatorship era. Key provisions include the digitalization of historical records to facilitate research and the modernization of data access rules.

The legislation expands the rights of relatives to access information and allows monitored individuals to identify the identities of those who cooperated with state security services and official personnel. While members of the Mi Hazánk and Tisza parties supported the measure, a majority of Fidesz representatives abstained from voting.
