Hungary plans to revitalize the Népliget Planetarium

Dávid Vitézy, the Minister of Transport and Investment, has announced a legislative proposal to revitalize the Planetarium located in Népliget. The building and its specialized Zeiss optical technology have suffered from years of neglect and lack of funding under the previous administration's management by the Society for the Dissemination of Scientific Knowledge.

If the Hungarian Parliament approves the proposal, management rights will transfer to the Hungarian Museum of Science, Technology and Transport. This move aims to facilitate the renovation and reopening of the facility. The Ministry of Transport and Investment, in collaboration with the Ministry of Science and Technology, has reviewed international case studies to develop plans for modernizing the institution with new content while maintaining its original mission of scientific education.

Zoltán Tanács, the Minister of Science and Technology, previously noted that a temporary reopening could potentially occur as early as 2027 following repairs to the existing projector. Long-term plans include a comprehensive 21st-century renovation featuring 8K+ full-dome projection technology and upgraded audio systems.
