Hungary to reform adoption laws to allow same-sex couples
Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar has announced plans to reform the nation's adoption laws, aiming to reverse restrictions that effectively banned same-sex couples from adopting children. The proposed changes seek to move adoption decision-making power away from politicians and the Minister for Family Affairs, placing it instead in the hands of professionals capable of assessing a child's welfare and environment.
Under the 2020 legislation introduced by Viktor Orban's Fidesz party, single applicants for adoption—a category often used by same-sex partners—required direct approval from the family affairs minister. This requirement functioned as a de facto ban on same-sex adoption. The move by the Magyar administration follows a landslide election victory in April that ended 16 years of Orban's rule.
The reform comes after the European Court of Justice ruled in April that certain Hungarian regulations restricting access to LGBTQ+ content violated European law. While Hungary continues to recognize civil unions rather than same-sex marriage, the government's new direction signals a significant shift toward restoring LGBTQ+ rights and aligning more closely with European Union standards.
