Hungary: PM Péter Magyar extends migration crisis and signals adoption reforms
Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has announced several policy shifts and continuations following his administration's takeover. Regarding migration, the government has extended the state of crisis caused by mass refugee waves until December 31. Magyar stated that maintaining the strict border control system established under Viktor Orbán is necessary to prevent weaknesses on the European Union's external borders and to avoid the risks of sudden increases in refugee pressure.
In a separate domestic policy move, Magyar has signaled intentions to reform adoption laws. He criticized the current system, suggesting that decisions regarding child welfare should be made by experts rather than politicians. He specifically addressed the rights of same-sex couples, stating that a child's well-being should be prioritized over the gender of the parents, and indicated that the existing framework inherited from the previous administration is no longer functional.
