Hungary posts record June trade surplus and loan growth

Hungary’s external trade in June 2026 showed a surplus of €1.305 billion, improving the balance by €519 million compared with the same month a year earlier. Export values rose 21% to €14.9 billion while imports increased 18% to €13.6 billion. The surge was led by machinery and transport equipment, whose export volume grew 15% year‑on‑year, and by a 7.3% rise in food, beverage and tobacco exports.

Household borrowing also hit new heights. Housing loan contracts signed in June totalled HUF 282.1 billion and personal‑loan contracts HUF 156.5 billion, pushing total household debt close to HUF 14 trillion – a 19% rise over the previous year. The Otthon Start programme continued to dominate, accounting for over 70% of new housing loans.

Industrial producer prices were mixed: overall they fell 0.4% YoY, while domestic sales prices rose 1.8% and export prices fell 1.4%. The energy‑producing segment saw a sharp 17.9% price increase.

Tourism weakened, with 1.9 million guests staying 4.3 million nights in June, down about 2%‑2.5% from June 2025. Domestic guests fell 2.2% and foreign guests 1.8%, with regional variations noted across Hungarian tourism zones.
