Hungary presents new literary concept at Frankfurt Book Fair

Hungary is presenting a renewed presence at the 78th Frankfurt Book Fair under the concept of ‘tabula rasa’ or ‘clean slate’. The initiative aims to re-evaluate the position of Hungarian literature in Europe and the world by focusing on contemporary authors and works with international appeal.

The Hungarian pavilion features a minimalist visual environment designed to highlight selected volumes on individual pedestals. Instead of traditional promotional gifts, visitors are provided with tear-off information sheets containing literary excerpts and English-language details to facilitate foreign rights sales. Two catalogs are being promoted, showcasing a total of 22 works: ten contemporary novels and short story collections under ‘New Hungarian Fiction: Autumn 2026’, and twelve works under ‘New Hungarian Childlit 2026’.

Significant emphasis is placed on the works of internationally recognized authors, including Nobel laureate László Krasznahorkai and the late Péter Nádas. Additionally, Judit Berg, Deputy State Secretary for Literature and Public Culture, announced that a previously discontinued literary translation support program may be reinstated in 2027. The 2026 guest of honor for the fair is the Czech Republic.
