Hungary proposes new higher education programs and primary school reforms

The Hungarian Ministry of Education and Children has released a legislative draft introducing several new higher education programs and a reform package for primary education.

In higher education, three new specializations are proposed. The Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences (MATE) has initiated programs in ecological farming and a master's degree in re-education specialists to assist those with cognitive or social skill losses. The University of Debrecen has proposed a biotechnology vocational program. Additionally, an Artificial Intelligence and Informatics master's program will be added to the official registry due to high market demand.

Regarding primary education, a 14-point professional proposal aims to reduce the workload of younger students and promote experience-based learning. Proposed changes include flexible start times, 35-minute lessons, longer breaks, and a reduction in mandatory written homework for first graders. The reform encourages creative and physical activities, such as outdoor movement, arts, and project-based learning. While the Ministry has consulted various interest groups, the organization Szülői Hang noted it was excluded from initial discussions, though it acknowledged the opportunity for constructive dialogue with Minister Judit Lannert.
