Hungary prosecutors seek dissolution of 61 political parties
The Hungarian Prosecutor's Office has initiated legal proceedings against 61 political parties regarding their potential dissolution. According to the Prosecutor General's Office, the actions are based on data from court registries and the National Election Office concerning the 2022 and 2026 parliamentary elections.
In 56 of these cases, prosecutors have requested that courts rule the cessation of the organizations' operations as political parties. Under the 1989 law on the operation and finances of political parties, such a ruling applies if an organization fails to field candidates in two consecutive general elections. In these instances, the organizations may continue to function as associations.
For an additional five parties, the prosecution is seeking total dissolution. This request is made in cases where the parties have reportedly ceased all activities and no longer possess assets. This current number of proceedings is lower than the 73 cases initiated following the 2022 elections.
