Péter Magyar: Hungarian prosecutors seek lifting of Prime Minister's immunity
The Hungarian Prosecutor General has requested the lifting of parliamentary immunity for Prime Minister Péter Magyar and two former ministers, Balázs Hankó and Miklós Seszták. This marks the first time legal proceedings have been announced against officials from the previous administration of Viktor Orbán.
Magyar is accused of theft following a June 2024 incident in which he allegedly took a man's mobile phone at a Budapest nightclub and threw it into the Danube. Magyar has dismissed the investigation as a 'disgrace' and a 'politically motivated attempt at assassination,' calling on parliament to immediately lift his immunity to resolve the matter.
Simultaneously, former Minister Balázs Hankó is under investigation for the alleged misuse of 47 million euros in public funds related to a 2026 election campaign. Former Minister Miklós Seszták faces allegations of receiving millions of euros in bribes concerning the purchase of used buses at inflated prices between 2014 and 2018.
