Hungary provides subsidy advances to support pig farmers

The Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture and Food has announced the provision of advance payments for animal welfare subsidies to support the pig farming sector. These advances apply to both fattening pigs and breeding sows to improve the liquidity of producers facing multiple economic pressures.

Applications for these advances can be submitted through the electronic platform of the Hungarian State Treasury from Monday until September 21, with funds expected to reach farmers in October. For fattening pigs, the advance covers the third and fourth quarters of the support year, while for breeding sows, it covers the second and third quarters.

The government cited several factors contributing to the sector's difficulties, including rising production costs, falling purchase prices, fluctuations in the forint exchange rate, and a changing market environment. Additionally, the continuous threat of African swine fever and extreme weather conditions affecting feed production have exacerbated the situation. The ministry stated that these measures aim to maintain the operational capacity of the agricultural sector and ensure food security.
