Hungary raises heat alert to highest level amid extreme temperatures
Hungary’s national health authority has extended the existing second‑level heat alert and, beginning at midnight on Saturday, will implement a third‑level (the highest) heat warning across the entire country until Tuesday night. The alert follows forecasts of sustained extreme temperatures and occasional thunderstorms.
Authorities warn that children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with cardiovascular conditions are most vulnerable. Recommendations include staying well hydrated with water, avoiding alcohol, caffeine and sugary drinks, keeping doors and windows closed during the day, using blinds or curtains, ventilating homes in the early morning or late evening, and limiting the use of electrical appliances that generate heat. Residents are urged not to leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, to observe fire bans in forested areas, and to call emergency services if they see anyone in distress.
Additional advice from health officials stresses wearing light, loose clothing, seeking shade during the hottest hours (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.), and taking regular breaks if working outdoors. Maintaining a indoor relative humidity around 50 % and avoiding direct drafts from air‑conditioners are also suggested to reduce heat‑related discomfort.
