Hungary ranks high in European Bird Watching Days
During the 34th European Bird Watching Days held on the first weekend of October, Hungary achieved top rankings in several categories. Organized by the Hungarian Ornithological and Nature Conservation Society (MME), the event saw 3,807 participants across 176 locations in Hungary observe a total of 628,635 birds.
In the international competition involving 28 countries across Europe and Central Asia, Hungary ranked first for the number of observation sites and the number of participants. However, Finland ranked first in the total number of birds observed, with 1.6 million sightings, followed by Sweden.
In Hungary, the most frequently observed species were starlings (229,397), cranes (58,013), and greylag geese (23,621). Notable rare sightings included the king eider, common murre, and various other species. The initiative, launched by BirdLife International in 1993, aims to collect data on bird migration patterns through public participation.
