Hungary reforms international sports event management
A new government decree in Hungary is restructuring the organization and funding of international sporting events to increase transparency and accountability in public spending. Under the new rules, sports federations will take on the responsibility for preparing, bidding for, organizing, and managing international sporting and diplomatic events.
Budgetary decisions for these events will be split based on cost: the minister responsible for sports policy will decide on funding below 500 million forints, while the government will decide on amounts exceeding that threshold.
The decree significantly reduces the roles of existing agencies. The National Event Organizing Agency (NRÜ) will no longer hold decision-making, management, procurement, or approval powers; it will instead focus on operational and implementation tasks upon request. Similarly, the National Communications Office (NKOH) will see its professional, licensing, and sponsorship authorities removed, shifting its focus to communication, development registration, and centralized procurement. The oversight of the NKOH will move from the Prime Minister's Office to the Minister of the Interior.
