Hungary declassifies secret 2006 government meeting minutes

The Hungarian government has declassified secret minutes from cabinet meetings held during the autumn of 2006. These documents, which were originally subject to a 50-year secrecy period, provide insight into the administration led by former Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány during the period surrounding the leak of his infamous ‘Őszöd speech’.

The speech, in which Gyurcsány admitted that the government had won the 2006 elections through lies, triggered a massive political and moral crisis in Hungary, leading to widespread protests and clashes between police and demonstrators in Budapest.

According to the released documents, the Gyurcsány cabinet focused primarily on implementing previously announced reform plans—such as the introduction of visitation fees and state reforms—rather than directly addressing the political crisis. The minutes reveal that as early as September 13, 2006, the government recognized the difficulty of communicating sensitive reform issues to the public without concrete numerical data.

Péter Magyar announced the release of these documents, which allow for a retrospective look at how the government managed state affairs amidst the social unrest that followed the speech's disclosure.
