Hungary repeals controversial anti-LGBTQ+ child protection measures

The Hungarian Parliament has passed a legislative reform to amend the 2021 child protection law, effectively removing restrictions on the portrayal and promotion of LGBTQ+ content for minors. The amendment passed with 139 votes in favor and 51 against, marking a significant policy shift under the new government led by Prime Minister Péter Magyar.

The previous legislation, enacted under former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, had prohibited the representation of homosexuality and gender identity in materials accessible to those under 18. This law had drawn intense criticism from human rights organizations and the European Union, with the European Court of Justice ruling in April 2026 that such restrictions violated EU core values.

The revised law shifts its focus toward protecting minors from content that could “seriously impair their physical, intellectual, emotional, or moral development,” without specific references to sexual orientation or gender identity. Additionally, the reform includes measures to strengthen child protection in public spaces and mandates faster assessments for children remaining in hospitals due to social or family circumstances rather than medical necessity.
