Hungary reports 31% increase in new housing completions
According to data from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office, 9,803 new homes were completed during the first three quarters of 2026, representing a 31% increase compared to the same period last year. This growth is partly attributed to a low baseline from the previous year, when housing completions reached a multi-year low.
In Budapest, completions rose by 59% compared to the first three quarters of 2025. Construction in the capital remains highly concentrated, with 56% of new Budapest homes located in the XIII and X districts. Other regions also saw growth, including a 24% increase in county cities and a 17% increase in villages.
While completions are rising, experts note that the total volume remains well below the estimated 40,000 annual units required for healthy stock renewal. The Wekerle Plusz housing support program is expected to drive future demand, as many new projects meet its criteria. Additionally, while building permits for homes in villages and other cities increased, permits in Budapest fell by 4%.
