Hungary reports 33 workplace fatalities and 620 million forints in safety fines

Hungarian occupational safety authorities reported significant findings from inspections conducted during the first half of 2026. During this period, officials examined the working conditions of over 130,000 employees across 3,779 workplaces. The inspections revealed safety irregularities at 74.54% of employers and 61.28% of employees.

In terms of accidents, the report noted 80 serious workplace incidents, including 33 fatalities and 31 cases involving life-threatening injuries. The authority issued over 620.6 million forints in occupational fines to employers across 194 cases, alongside additional administrative and procedural fines.

Most severe violations were identified in the construction industry, primarily due to a lack of fall protection. In the manufacturing sector, the absence or disabling of machine safety equipment was a frequent issue, while electrical safety deficiencies were found across all inspected sectors. Other major concerns included improper use of lifting machinery, unsafe handling of hazardous materials, and unauthorized asbestos removal.
