Hungary reports multiple viral outbreaks and African Swine Fever spread

Hungary is facing several simultaneous viral outbreaks affecting humans and livestock. According to the National Public Health Center (NNGYK), three community outbreaks were reported between October 12 and 18, involving 251 people. The largest occurred at a primary school in Győr-Moson-Sopron county, where 177 students and staff contracted a virus, with calicivirus confirmed in several cases. Other outbreaks included 34 cases at a kindergarten in Pest county and 40 cases at a nursing home in Hajdú-Bihar county. Symptoms primarily include vomiting and diarrhea, though most cases did not require hospitalization.

In the agricultural sector, African Swine Fever (ASF) continues to impact Baranya county. Data from the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) indicates that nearly all settlements in the county are now under some level of risk or restriction. The virus has spread from wild boar to domestic pig populations, with significant losses reported in locations such as Drávafokon, Okorág, Lakócsa, and Kölkeden. Parts of southern Baranya are currently under strict Type III restrictions to contain the spread.
