Hungary reports only 37% of adults planning summer vacations, cost cited as main barrier

A CIB Bank‑commissioned survey of 1,000 Hungarian adults shows that just 37 % intend to take a holiday this summer. Of those, 34 % have already begun arranging travel in the first quarter of the year, motivated primarily by lower prices (47 %) and early‑bird discounts, followed by the desire for stress‑free planning (44 %) and a broader choice of accommodation and flights (37 %).

Most travellers (62 %) organise their trips independently, handling accommodation, transport and activities themselves, with only 13 % buying an all‑inclusive package from a travel agency. Domestic destinations are the most popular (47 % of respondents), while 28 % aim for the Mediterranean (Greece, Italy, Spain) and 27 % consider nearby countries such as Croatia or Austria. Water‑front holidays top the preferred types (33 %).

Conversely, 40 % of the adult population does not plan a vacation, largely because they cannot afford it (68 % of non‑travellers) or cite health reasons (21 %). As Norbert Vasas of CIB Bank noted, "the survey clearly shows that those who want to travel are preparing consciously and well in advance – whether it’s booking or budgeting."
