Hungary retail closures for August 20 long weekend

In August 2026, Hungary will observe a four-day long weekend due to the August 20 state foundation holiday falling on a Thursday and a compensatory day off on Friday, August 21.

Major retail chains, including ALDI, Auchan, CBA, Lidl, Metro, Penny, Spar, and Tesco, will be closed on Thursday, August 20. Most stores are expected to resume their regular operating hours starting Friday, August 21, and continue through the weekend.

On the holiday, shopping options will be limited to gas stations, certain non-stop stores, designated smaller shops, markets, and fairs. Pharmacies will provide essential services through on-call and emergency duty pharmacies.
