Hungary and UK economic data show slowing retail and housing growth

Economic data from Hungary and the United Kingdom show signs of cooling consumer activity and shifting market trends.

In Hungary, retail sales growth slowed to 2.4% year-on-year in August, down from 4.9% in July. This deceleration was driven by a sharp slowdown in food retail and a moderation in non-food spending. Meanwhile, inflation data shows a 1.6% annual increase in September, with food prices decreasing by 1.3% while services saw a 4.9% rise. The housing market in Hungary is also losing momentum; nationwide house prices remained unchanged in September, while prices in Budapest fell for the second consecutive month.

In the United Kingdom, the housing market remained flat in September. According to the Lloyds House Price Index, average property prices showed 0.0% monthly and annual growth, holding steady at £298,441. Analysts suggest that while higher mortgage rates and economic uncertainty continue to restrain the market, buyer interest is showing signs of life, with new enquiries reaching their highest level since February.
