Hungary reviews Paks II nuclear project with Rosatom

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has initiated a comprehensive review of the Paks II nuclear power plant expansion project, a major agreement originally signed by his predecessor, Viktor Orbán, with the Russian state corporation Rosatom. Magyar expressed concerns regarding the project's economic justification, its technical design, and its adherence to original timelines.

Magyar criticized the technology for lacking a closed-loop cooling system, noting its vulnerability to environmental factors such as the recent droughts that have impacted the Danube River. He also highlighted that while the project was intended to be operational by 2024, approximately 2.8 billion euros (1,000 billion forints) have been spent on a site that currently consists largely of warehouses and concrete pits.

Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev has defended the project, stating that construction is proceeding according to schedule. Likhachev noted that foundation work for the fifth block is over 80% complete and claimed that the corporation has not yet received formal inquiries from the new Hungarian government. The review process will examine the project's financing, subcontractors, and long-term energy security implications for Hungary.
