Hungary secures €16.4 bn EU funding to add 5 GW renewable capacity

Hungary reached a historic agreement in Brussels that earmarks €16.4 billion of EU money for the country’s energy transition. Of this, €1.4 billion will be directed to modernise the national electricity grid, allowing the integration of up to 5 000 MW of new renewable generation – mainly solar and wind farms. The upgrades will involve installing tens of thousands of smart meters to improve monitoring and efficiency for households and businesses.

The funding package is presented as a signal to investors that Hungary is ready for a greener, more competitive economy. Authorities expect an additional €1.5‑2 billion of private investment in grid projects and renewable installations in the coming years, which should create new jobs and boost energy security.

"5000 megawatt új megújuló energia" (5 GW of new renewable energy) is highlighted as a key outcome of the deal, underscoring the scale of the planned shift toward cleaner power sources.
