Hungary braces for intense heat and thunderstorms this week

Meteorological services forecast temperatures above 30 °C across most of Hungary for the coming days, with peak daytime readings reaching 33‑35 °C in some areas. A high‑pressure anticlockwise system will keep the country under a prolonged heat wave (kánikula), while the north‑eastern and western counties face an increased risk of scattered showers, strong thunderstorms and occasional hail. The north‑westerly wind is expected to intensify, producing gusts that may aggravate the storms.

Health authorities warn that the extreme heat can cause dehydration, heat‑exhaustion and heat‑stroke, especially among the elderly, young children and people with chronic illnesses. Experts advise staying hydrated, avoiding outdoor activity during the hottest hours, using shades or reflective foil, keeping windows closed while it is hotter outside, and ventilating briefly in the early morning or late evening when outdoor temperatures drop. People should monitor local alerts for sudden storms, seek shelter from heavy rain and strong winds, and seek medical help if symptoms such as dizziness, rapid pulse or confusion appear.
