Hungary’s national chief medical officer re‑imposed a third‑degree heat alert for the whole country from 00:00 30 July to 24:00 4 August 2026 as temperatures are forecast to climb to around 40 °C in many regions. The alert triggers health warnings urging residents to stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, caffeine and strenuous outdoor work, and to protect vulnerable groups such as the elderly, infants, pregnant women and people with chronic illnesses.

The government ordered water‑conservation measures, including bathing bans at five beaches on Lake Velence. An Energy Supply Operations Unit and a rotating crisis plan were activated; industrial electricity use may be curtailed, but hospitals, social‑care facilities and other essential services are exempt.

Due to record‑low river levels, the Paksi Nuclear Power Plant shut down its third block, cutting 750 MW from its 2 000 MW capacity. To assist the public, MÁV Group provides free bottled water and operates water‑filling stations at major train and bus terminals. The transport ministry also partially lifted the weekend truck‑stop restriction for 7.5‑tonne vehicles on 1–2 August.

Health authorities emphasized that prolonged heat can cause dehydration, electrolyte loss, heat‑stroke and aggravated chronic conditions, urging continuous fluid intake and avoidance of the hottest part of the day.
