Hungary and neighboring countries face extreme heat and severe thunderstorms

A hot front moving across Central Europe is expected to bring temperatures of 31‑37 °C to Hungary on June 20‑21, 2026, with the national meteorological service issuing second‑degree heat alerts and warnings for thunderstorms, hail, strong winds and occasional cloud‑breaks. The heat wave follows the astronomical summer solstice on Sunday at 10:24 UTC. Forecasts predict intense cumulonimbus development, multiple rounds of downpours and isolated hailstorms, especially in northern and eastern counties, while the western and central regions will mainly experience dry, scorching conditions.

Similar extreme weather is forecast for neighboring states. Romania’s agencies warn of temperatures reaching up to 36 °C in several counties, accompanied by localized thunderstorms and hail. Serbia expects the first day of the astronomical summer to be marked by high temperatures and isolated showers, particularly in the Vojvodina region. Czech media highlight that Hungary’s heat record of 37.1 °C may be matched or exceeded, prompting a nationwide severe‑storm alert.

Authorities advise staying hydrated, limiting outdoor activity for vulnerable groups, and monitoring official alerts. Traffic disruptions, road works and increased risk of heat‑related health incidents have already been reported in Hungary.
