Hungary sees surge in electric scooter accidents

Accidents involving electric scooters have risen significantly in Hungary. Official data indicates that in the first month of the year, 282 road accidents resulting in personal injury were caused by motorized scooter users. This represents a 61 percent increase compared to the same period last year and a 152 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024.

Despite the rise in accidents, the demand for mandatory scooter insurance has seen a decline. Netrisk reported over 5,500 such contracts through early September, a 5.2 percent decrease from the 5,800 registered during the same period last year. Experts suggest this decline is due to low awareness of the insurance obligation and the fact that those who signed up when the mandate was introduced in July 2024 are not necessarily renewing.

In response to the growing safety concerns, the Ministry of Transport and Investment has been collecting feedback via a traffic safety questionnaire specifically addressing electric scooter use. New regulations and potential legislative amendments are expected following the evaluation of this data.
