Hungary selected to host final 2028 Olympic boxing qualifier

World Boxing approved Hungary as the venue for the final global boxing qualification tournament ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The event is scheduled for May 2028 and will be the last opportunity for boxers to secure Olympic slots. World Boxing President Gennady Golovkin said the decision shows the organization’s progress and its commitment to a transparent future within the Olympic movement. Hungarian Boxing Association President István Kovács hailed the award as a historic achievement for Hungarian sport, noting that the qualifier will carry significance comparable to a world championship.

The tournament follows continental qualifiers, with the European event set for Istanbul during the 2027 European Games, and the first global qualifier to be hosted by Italy. The 2028 Olympic boxing programme will feature seven men’s and seven women’s weight categories from 14 July to 30 July in Los Angeles.
