Hungary selects Ildikó Enyedi’s ‘Silent Friend’ for Oscar submission
Hungary has officially selected Ildikó Enyedi’s film, ‘Silent Friend’ (Csendes barát), as its entry for the International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards. The announcement was made by the National Film Institute.
The film explores the philosophical connection between humans and nature through the perspective of a ginkgo biloba tree across three different time periods: 1908, 1972, and 2020. ‘Silent Friend’ has already received significant international recognition, including six awards at the Venice Film Festival and being named among the top five films for the FIPRESCI Grand Prix.
The selection was decided by a committee including cinematographer Mátyás Erdély, director-screenwriter Gyula Gazdag, film historian Gábor Gelencsér, festival director Kristóf Horváth, director Ágnes Kocsis, and producer Sára László. The Academy will announce the five official nominees on January 21, 2027, with the awards ceremony scheduled for March 14 in Los Angeles.
