Hungary targets tenfold wind power expansion by 2030
The Hungarian government has announced a major shift in energy policy, aiming to expand wind power capacity tenfold by 2030. Minister Dávid Vitézy stated that tenders will be issued for 4,000 megawatts of capacity to bolster national energy security. A specific tender for 700 megawatts is expected to be announced by August 31, and a decree will establish 25 simplified zones for easier permitting processes.
Proponents argue that wind energy provides a vital seasonal complement to solar power, as wind efficiency peaks during autumn and winter when electricity demand is highest. They also suggest that hybrid wind-solar installations can improve grid utilization and reduce the need for imported fossil fuels.
However, the plan faces significant criticism from environmentalists and technical experts. Skeptics highlight the high material requirements, noting that a single 50-megawatt wind farm requires thousands of tons of steel and concrete. Concerns have also been raised regarding the non-recyclable nature of turbine blades, the impact on bird and bat populations, and the relatively low wind speeds in much of Hungary compared to Northern Europe. Critics warn that the volatility of wind power necessitates expensive grid stabilization measures, potentially costing up to 4% of the national budget.
