Hungary ties EU budget support to cohesion and agriculture funds

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has conditioned his country's support for the European Union's 2028–2034 budget on specific financial guarantees. Speaking at a European Council meeting in Brussels, Magyar stated that Hungary will only approve the long-term financial framework if it receives all funds to which it is entitled and if there are no reductions in cohesion policy and agricultural subsidies.

The budget negotiations remain unresolved. The Irish Presidency has proposed a framework valued at 1.62 trillion euros, which is 141 billion euros less than the European Commission's initial proposal. This reduction has faced opposition from both net contributors and member states advocating for support for poorer regions and agricultural payments. Cohesion and agriculture currently represent approximately two-thirds of the total EU budget.

While reducing these expenditures could free up resources for defense and competitiveness, many member states oppose such cuts. The European Council aims to reach an agreement by the end of 2026, with legislative adoption scheduled for 2027 to ensure funding begins on January 1, 2028. The framework requires approval from all 27 member states and the European Parliament.
