Hungary tightens regulations on emergency vehicle light usage
The Hungarian government has introduced stricter regulations regarding the use of distinguishing lights and sound signals on vehicles. Under a new decree from the Ministry of Interior, the scope of officials permitted to use police-related security vehicles has been narrowed; specifically, among government ministers, only the Minister of Interior is authorized to use such vehicles for personal protection.
The new rules establish a more rigorous licensing process. Organizations seeking to use blue or yellow flashing lights must prove that their activities justify such signals and meet all legal requirements. Authorities are limited to requesting corrections for incomplete documentation a maximum of two times.
Certain entities, including ambulances, the police, the fire department, the Hungarian Defense Forces, the prison service, the National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV), and national security services, may continue to use these signals without specific permission for designated vehicles. Other groups, such as emergency blood and organ transplant services or certain utility and transport vehicles, must now obtain a permit.
Additionally, specific state entities, including Sándor Palace, the Public Procurement and Supply Directorate, and the Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, are now required to obtain permits for vehicles used in high-priority state interests. Existing permits will be reviewed within 60 days, and those not meeting the new criteria will be revoked.
