Hungary to acquire 105 new double-decker buses for long-distance travel
The Hungarian Ministry of Transport and MÁV have announced the procurement of 105 new double-decker, air-conditioned buses designed for highway travel. Of these, 55 will serve the country's busiest long-distance routes, including destinations such as Zalaegerszeg, Salgótarján, Pécs, Hódmezővásárhely, and Szekszárd.
A significant portion of the fleet—50 buses—is designated to serve as replacements for rail services during major infrastructure upgrades under the Baross Gábor Railway Development Plan. This initiative aims to provide high-quality alternatives for passengers when InterCity train services are interrupted by track renovations on major lines, including those serving Szeged, Miskolc, Debrecen, Nyíregyháza, and Győr.
This procurement is part of a broader modernization program involving the acquisition of 515 new buses in total. Additionally, tenders have been issued for 250 new regional and suburban articulated buses to replace aging vehicles in provincial cities and the Budapest metropolitan area.
