Hungary to ban wild animals in circuses starting 2027

The Hungarian government has announced a ban on the use of specific wild animals and their hybrids in circuses, effective January 1, 2027. Government spokesperson Éva Magyar stated that the decision is driven by both animal welfare and public safety considerations.

The new regulations prohibit the acquisition, breeding, keeping, training, and exhibition of designated wild species in circus performances. This move aims to align Hungary with increasing European trends toward restricting or banning wild animals in entertainment, addressing previous issues where laxer regulations allowed animals to be imported from other countries.

To facilitate the transition, the government is providing a grace period for animals currently held legally. These animals may remain with their current circus troupes for the duration of their lives or until they belong to a specific lineage, but they will no longer be permitted to breed, undergo training, or be used for new circus performances.
