Hungary launches €1.5 bn grid upgrade program to boost renewable capacity

Economy and Energy Minister István Kapitány announced a €1.5 billion programme funded by European Union resources to modernise Hungary’s electricity transmission and distribution networks. The upgrades are intended to accommodate almost 5 GW of new renewable generation, improve grid resilience and support the rollout of smart‑meter devices for households.

A tender for at least 700 MW of new wind power will be published on 31 August, with a broader plan to add a total of 4 GW of wind capacity by 2030 – more than ten times the current 330 MW level. The first public consultation on the tender documentation is scheduled for mid‑July. Funding will cover up to 75‑90 % of eligible costs for distribution and transmission operators.

The programme is presented as a key step toward diversifying Hungary’s energy mix, reducing import dependence and enhancing energy security while advancing the country’s climate goals.
