Hungary to create new battery‑plant regulator after Semcorp environmental shutdown

The Hungarian government plans to establish a dedicated authority to oversee battery‑factory operations, aiming to tighten inspection and enforcement after the Semcorp plant in Debrecen was suspended for environmental violations. Minister Gajdos László highlighted uncertainties about site selection criteria and called for stricter monitoring of emissions and rapid action on breaches.

Semcorp Hungary Kft. was ordered to halt production of separator foil after water samples near the plant showed metal concentrations far above legal limits, leading to a one‑million‑forint fine and a court challenge. Debrecen’s mayor, László Papp, demanded the company begin remediation and leave the city, warning that the plant could be closed permanently.

The forthcoming regulator is expected to set unified operating rules for battery manufacturers and ensure consistent, transparent enforcement across the country.
