Hungary to establish national animal welfare authority and secretariat
László Gajdos, the Minister responsible for the Living Environment, has announced significant structural reforms to strengthen animal protection in Hungary. The government plans to establish a new deputy state secretariat dedicated specifically to animal welfare, a move described as unprecedented in the country.
In addition to the new secretariat, a national authority with broad jurisdiction will be created to conduct strict animal welfare inspections and address unfair conditions. The ministry also intends to review the existing dog policing system and reassess how state support is distributed to animal shelters and rescue organizations to ensure aid reaches those with the greatest need.
Minister Gajdos has held consultations with major animal welfare umbrella organizations, including the Hungarian Animal Protection and Nature Lovers' Association, the National Organization of Hungarian Animal Protectors, the Hangya Community Foundation, and the National Animal Guard Foundation, to coordinate these upcoming measures.
