Hungary to quadruple minimum old-age pension by 2027
The Tisza Party has announced a plan to more than quadruple Hungary's minimum old-age pension starting January 1, 2027. The proposed increase would raise the monthly minimum from the current 28,500 forints (approximately 78 euros) to 120,000 forints (approximately 329 euros).
Experts estimate that approximately 240,000 people could be directly affected by this change. For about 55,000 pensioners, the increase would represent at least a doubling of their current monthly income. The current minimum level has remained unchanged since 2008, during which time it lost more than half of its real value.
Discussions continue regarding whether this new minimum should also extend to disability benefits. While the Tisza Party's platform suggests both old-age and disability pensions should not fall below 120,000 forints, current disability benefits are legally separated from the pension system and are treated as healthcare assistance.
