Hungary to raise pension minimum to 120,000 HUF in 2027

Hungarian Finance Minister András Kármán has announced a major pension reform scheduled for January 2027. The centerpiece of the Tisza government's plan is raising the old-age pension minimum from 28,500 HUF—a level unchanged since 2008—to 120,000 HUF.

The plan introduces a tiered increase system for pensions below 146,000 HUF. Following the standard annual inflation-linked adjustment, specific supplements will be applied: those below 108,000 HUF will be raised to 120,000 HUF, while others will receive incremental increases ranging from 6,000 to 12,000 HUF based on their current bracket. The goal is to ensure that those with longer service histories maintain higher relative earnings.

The reform also extends to other social benefits. The orphan's allowance minimum will rise from 50,000 HUF to 60,000 HUF, and disability and rehabilitation benefits will increase by 10 percent. Additionally, allowances for elderly individuals lacking sufficient service years will see their thresholds doubled. The package is expected to affect more than 700,000 people.

While the announcement has been welcomed by some social organizations, critics note that certain family benefits, such as the Child Care Allowance (GYES), may not automatically rise alongside the pension minimum due to existing legal structures regarding the social projection base.
