Hungary to increase railway infrastructure budget to 80 billion forints
The Hungarian government plans to significantly increase funding for railway infrastructure in the 2027 budget. According to Transport and Investment Minister Dávid Vitézy, the allocation for renovating tracks and stations is set to rise from 30 billion to 80 billion forints.
This funding is specifically designated for smaller-scale track renovations, station reconstructions, and the removal of speed restrictions caused by poor track conditions, rather than large-scale EU-funded projects. One of the first major projects scheduled for March 2027 is a comprehensive reconstruction of the main line section between the Városliget junction and Kőbánya-Kispest, which serves commuters between Cegléd and Budapest.
These efforts are part of the broader Baross Gábor Railway Development Plan, which aims to invest approximately 3,550 billion forints over the next seven to eight years into railway modernization, including vehicle procurement.
